Week 14 Woodcut 19 For real

Ok I got back from Chattanooga and did this in one day, this is another one that would really benefit from the multiblock treatment , and maybe in afew days I'll get around to it in the meantime this is done 30" by 20 " like all the rest....

Week 14 Woodcut 19- REJECT

Ok this was supposed to be woodcut 19 , I was trying to hurry to get this done early as I was going to Chattanooga for an Outlaw Printmakers show last weekend, but I kept making bad cuts and couldnt ever salvage the shaky drawing. in the end i decided to print it just to show that I'd been working. the response ended up being favorable enough for it so maybe later I'll go back and work it up into a color woodcut and see if I can save it until then this has been rejected....

Week 13 Woodcut 18

Ok , heres the story on this one, I made this image originally for Yeehaw Industries they ended up using it for a tshirt graphic. they still have the original block, so i thought I'd just pretty much do the same thing over again so I could use the block in my installations. I had tried to develop it into more of a narrative image than the first attempt, I was gonna make it a swamp scene i had a standup bass playing rabbit in there plus the mouse and even had a couple of turtles, but i screwed up some of the imporatnt cuts and ended up just cutting all that junk away... but I do think I'm gonna do a block with just the rabbit now ..... anyway here it is. ( 20" by 30" just like all the rest

Week 13 Woodcut 17

This one has been finished since last sunday I think, I had posted on facebook, it didnt get a lot of comments or likes. Maybe it looks too much like a rebel flag for some people , or maybe it it's just not that good. either way, it's done and I've moved on to the next woodcut anyway again it's 20" by 30"

The First Fifteen...

Heres the graphic i came up commemorating my first fifteen woodcuts for the OWAW project... yes I had more important things to do than waste my time on this but I didnt feel like cutting today....

Week 11 Woodcut 15

Got this one done on Friday. number fifteen! It really is easy doing one a week but i need to do two a week for the rest of the year and even that wont get me to one hundred i need to do 3 for thirteen of those weeks ., I expect to really blast through them this summer when I'm not working but even that is only like 10 weeks so there are gonna be a few more times during the school year that i'm gonna be cutting like mad to get three done in a week. anyway It was hard for me to draw this Tusken Raider and the thing that hangs around his neck looks really odd. what is that supposed to be anyway?

Week 10 woodcut 14

I did this in one day or really half a day after I had it all drawn out. It was nice getting off work today due to bad weather. Birds, what can you say about em that hasn't already been said... like all of the prints in the OWAW project, it measures 30" by 20"

Week 10 Woodcut 13

I know this isnt the coolest print I ever made but I need it for a big banner I'm making to take with me for SGC in St Louis. I used to try to be more experimental with my use of typography in my woodcuts like 15 or 16 years ago maybe. i have gotten kind of monotone with it these days but I really do dig cutting out letters.... later this week, I should have a decent one with a lot of birds in it...

Week ten Woodcut 12

Actually i finished this one last thursday and i did post it to facebook that night but I have been too busy to get it up over here. It's gonna be a rough stretch between now and when i get back from SGC at the end of next week. in the meantime I have another block with mostly text, and one with a bunch of birds I'm doing for this week. plus I hope to do another with alligators and one of a Tusken Raider before i go to St Louis. We'll see....

Week 8 Woodcut 10

Celebrate Diversity!
Ok this is the second print for this week, the week ends today for me and I wanted to have 2 others done by today but I guess It'll be ok if they spill over to the next week. Anyway I did this one quick I started cutting last night and finished it up today. like all of them it is 30" by 20"

Week 8 Woodcut 9

Well I'm starting to get a little bit ahead but it's gonna take a lot of work to get from one woodcut a week all the way to 100 for the year. Anyway this one is based on my all time favorite picture of Bukowski and this washed up broad. like all of these woodcuts it's 20" by 30"

Woodcut 8 Week 7

See ! I think I can do it. this is my second woodcut for the week. i have a third one well underway! I'm getting so charged by doing this ! It is getting easier and easier knowing that as soon as I finish one i'm right onto the next one . It's very liberating and takes a lot of the pressure off to make each one a home run!

Woodcut 7 week 7

I have two prints for this week and I'm shooting for a third. I'm this close to committing to 100 blocks for the year. If I can get caught up to 16 prints by the end of February I'm gonna do it!

Wednesday, February 09, 2011

Week Six woodcut Six

Well I was kind of thinking about making one woodcut each month in full color and I still might start doing that, but so far I'm just having too much fun knocking em out and movin on. This week , again I have already finished my woodcut for next week already, and I'm startin another block tommorrow. Right now I really think 52 blocks wont be a problem. Knowing I'm going to be making another one and another one is really liberating and takes a lot of pressure off.! This one may end up being used for a poster for another print studio I work with but I'm not sure right now....

Week 5 Woodcut 5

I was working on this a week ago and bailed on it in favor of the Alphabet print I made. Well, I finished it up and have actually completed an additional print for the week but I'm not gonna post it quite yet. I'm hoping to figure out a way to use some of the i've made so far for some commercial print and pattern design , but I'm basically just starting out on that adventure.at any rate I don't seem to be having a problem knocking out one a week....

Week 4 Woodcut Four

Heres my print for week four. It's just a simple woodcut alphabet , but it's something that I've wanted to do for some time. The thing that I am most excited about for this year/project is that i'll be making more woodcuts than I normally would and I'll be able to loosen up in tertms of subject matter and just take more chances....

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Week Three Woodcut Three

Well I was working on something totally different as late as Tuesday and switched over to this one. i like it better. I actually am planning to make one woodcut a month in color and this will likely end up being the one...

Week TWO Print TWO January 8-15

Like I said, I didnt have the idea for making one print a week until I was well underway on this one and realized I was making one woodcut a week. So again, i am a day or two off schedule but I should get caught up this week, and I can now start posting updates along the way as I conceptualize, draw, and cut each new block!

Week ONE Print ONE

Ok: When I made this, I wasn't thinking about this project, actually I finished it on January 10 and I am just now starting the blog on the January 17th but I'll be caught up for print three week three in a couple of days....

Chocolate Angel

I found a great picture of this little girl in a thrift store back in Virginia. I always wonder about pictures of kids that get given away. did they get rid of the kids too?

Kids and Animals

I kept finding really cool ads with dogs smoking and stuff . don't forget I was making this stuff whn I didn't have any ideas for woodcuts. at kept me busy and helped me organize my thoughts....

Blameless

I used to spend a lot of time looking at the ground when I was walking to my job. I used to find a lot of empty cig packs and at the same time through my extensive research I discovered a number of intriguing celebrity edorsements cig ads.....

Old 3D Pieces

This is a bunch of 3D stuff , shadow box, whatever. its mostly 10 years old or so but I thought i'd post it here anyway I think some of it is on my website but I wanted to be more active on the blog anyway so....

Me , Nick, Some Guns and my shoes...

So last year Nick Arnold (a printmaking friend of mine up at Syracuse) came by to visit for a few hours and he posed for some pics with my guns , when i got up to Philly for SGC last April he gave me this killer little woodcut he made from one of the pics he took of us....

Something Cool

So you start to feel like you're on to something when people start making art from your quotes.... check out this cool woodcut from Levi Banker based on one of my quotes on facebook....

A few words about Throwback

Ok, We are now well into the third limited edition run of mt dew throwback, or is it the fourth counting the first version of throwback?. Anyway I gotta say that it stokes me out so much, to go into a store and be able to buy a can of Dew with that hillbilly artwork on it. Granted it would be cooler if the colors were predominately green with white and red , instead of the white green red scheme that they are using, but still it makes me happy to see it. It would be better still if the hillbilly was standing there pointing his gun and the pig and the outhouse etc were all there too. I'm so glad its back on the shelves the real sugar makes a big difference, the orange juice in it makes a big difference, ( the first run of throwback didnt have it....) It might not be quite as good as dew in a glass bottle from West Jefferson, NC but it's a great drink never the less....

I hate having to stop printing to eat

I have had an ongoing battle with the need to eat versus the need to print. I used to go days without eating , just fueled by Dew and ink fumes. I never went a day out of the studio.... now i'm siting down eating a plate of sausages and a hot dog instead of printing.... I still have ink on my hands and cans of Dew but I took the time out to eat . pretty basic stuff but it gets in the way of what yer tryin to do.

When Prints are Outlawed Only Outlaws Will Make Prints

Oprah says its great to have your own private jet I wouldn't know, but I got to admit it feels good to hold an AK 47 while standing in your own studio.
